I became a conductor!
Jul 2, 2025

Whenever I'm lucky enough to record an orchestra I'd always sit in the control room emotionally waving my hands "air conducting" like a loon and once, just for fun, I had a go. I was back in Prague in July with the orchestra I recorded my first live score in 2002, this time recording strings for Sensible Band's Positivity album.
The videographer asked for footage of me conducting, I fessed up and said I'm not a conductor but if there's time might be a chance for fun. After closely watching the conductor this inspired to ask if I could have a go - as long as he stands by ready take over at a moment's notice as the cost per hour is in the £1000s. I stood on the podium, 50 eyes staring at me and said I'm not a trained conductor, if I'm not up to the task do say.

Much to my surprise, I got the thumbs up and ended up conducting the rest of the album. I was shaking, what an amazing experience. Thank you to the orchestra, recording crew and especially to Jon Hare for trusting me.
I can't share the recordings, however it happened to be my brother's 50th so with 1 minute remaining asked if they wouldn't mind performing happy birthday, it was completely unrehearsed so excuse the fluffs.
I rang Nic Raine who'd conducted almost all of my scores, his response 'Welcome to your new career as a conductor'.

It happened to be a heatwave so here's Jon and I in the Old Town Square just before midnight and it's still 25 degrees!
